Jake and Joey came after Bub, and at that stage the idea of building a proper aviary was still somewhere in the distant future.
So I improvised.
They ended up with two makeshift little “natural habitats” inside the house — branches, plants, platforms, toys and whatever else I could put together to make them feel at home.

And I was ridiculously pleased with myself.
For almost three years, Jake and Joey happily lived this way, flying around the house and treating the place as if it had been designed entirely for them.
Graeme, however, had a slightly different experience.
A peaceful dinner was never guaranteed.
One of them might suddenly land in the middle of his meal. Another might decide that the glass of water beside his plate looked like the perfect place for a bath.

Apparently, boundaries were never discussed.
Eventually, after three years of sharing his dining room, his meals and occasionally his drinking water with the birds, Graeme decided he had had enough.
He wanted his dining table back.
More importantly, he wanted to eat a meal without wondering who might land in it.
And that was how the idea of the aviary finally became much less distant.
