I swear I wasn’t looking for another blog post, but apparently this little dove had other ideas.
Yesterday, I was in the kitchen when I happened to look through the sheer curtains towards the aviary. Something caught my eye.
There was a bird in there that looked too big to be one of the Gouldian finches, but smaller than Red, our red-rumped parrot.
I looked again.
Sure enough, we had a newcomer.
A little dove had somehow moved himself into the aviary.
The obvious question was: How in the world did he get in there?
If you look at the photo from our open balcony door towards the aviary, he would first have had to make his way across the balcony to the aviary door on the far right.

That part I can understand. He can fly.
But then he somehow had to discover the tiny opening right at the bottom of the aviary door and squeeze his way through it.
Why?
How did he even know there was an opening there?
And more importantly, how did he manage to get through when I sometimes struggle to work out how things in my own house operate?
The resident birds don’t seem particularly bothered by their unexpected guest. He has simply joined them on the branches as though this had all been arranged beforehand and I was the only one who wasn’t informed.

So I’ve decided to call him How.
Not because it is a particularly beautiful name for a dove.
But because every time I look at him, I’m still asking the same question:
How?
