We had our Sydney Marathon photo and video viewing night — lots of food, drinks, laughter and sharing of race experiences. We were also given a little token for our efforts; the full marathon runners received red capes.
Anyway, after we finished watching everything, a certain someone decided to leave the video of my last 100 metres playing over and over again.
Which gave everyone plenty of opportunity to analyse my running form.
I pointed out that for years, I had a very different picture in my head of how I looked when I ran.
Me: I used to think I ran like a horse — streamlined. Then a friend took a video of me during Dynamic in a Dress and I was shocked. I didn’t look anything like what I imagined. Instead of a horse, I looked like a penguin.

Mick: Actually, you look like a thoroughbred when you run.
Me: Yeah. A thoroughbred penguin.
Steve: Penguins are streamlined too.
Then Steve and Mick said almost in unison:
“When they’re in water.”
Apparently I’m not a bad athlete.
I’m just competing in the wrong sport.
