Gratitude in Running

I’m often asked if I feel miserable training in the warm weather we’ve been experiencing in Cairns for months.

At first, I would say yes.

But when I really think about it, running in the heat and humidity has actually made me grateful for the smallest things.

When you run for hours in this kind of weather, it can feel a bit like being a fish out of water. Everything takes more effort. And if I’m not mindful of my pace, I can end up gasping for air.

So suddenly, things I would normally barely notice become little gifts.

A breeze.

The shade of a tree.

A cloudy morning.

A bit of rain.

For a few moments, they feel like oxygen to a fish out of water.

And there’s another thing I love about running early in the morning: you meet people.

Before 7am, I’ve probably already smiled at more than ten people—and quite a few dogs. 😊

Maybe running in the heat isn’t always pleasant.

But it certainly gives me plenty to be grateful for.

What a blessing.
