I fall in love with places easily, so I have plenty of “happy places.”
But I’d say Bruny Island is my happiest one.
At least for now.
Don’t get me wrong — I love Cairns, and it will always be home.
But if I ever had to relocate, this would be the place.
What’s not to love?
It feels wonderfully remote, yet everything is still within easy reach.

There’s the lighthouse, beaches that seem to stretch forever, windswept walks, wildlife appearing along the track, fresh air, peace and bliss of having very few people around.

Yes, it’s cold.
But with the right gear, you’ll be fine.
And there’s something very refreshing about being able to walk along the shore without that sticky tropical feeling following you everywhere.

But what really sealed it for me?
The oyster farms.
You can sit down and enjoy what the café assistant proudly described as “authentic oysters.”
I’m still not entirely sure what an unauthentic oyster would be, but apparently these were the real thing.
Straight from the farm.
Fresh, simple and very hard to argue with.
So if I ever disappear one day, don’t worry too much.
There’s a very good chance I’ve simply run away to Bruny Island.
Probably somewhere near the oysters.
